Welding, Weeding, or Watering -- What's YourIdeal Role to Play at the Farm?

Birch Point Farm Volunteer Opportunities

We are always interested in help on the farm (please call first!) but here is a list of special tasks that would be extra-special help if someone had the energy and skill to take them on:

  • Work with your farmers to make a long-range business plan and strategize re: resources for funding to buy the farm (this process is underway, but your input and experience are welcome)
  • Planting and weeding parties!  We'll host several, and at least one "hoe-a-thon" this season- check your newsletters for dates; let me know if you can help organize
  • Take on a "guest watering shift" at the greenhouse on days we can't cover
  • Welding and auto mechanics!  The market van needs help in lots of ways, esp. the trailer hitch and rear door.
  • Organize pot lucks for CSA members - could be at the farm or somewhere else, but we would love some help in organizing
  • Clean out and resurrect perennial gardens (flower beds, etc)- any gardeners/landscapers out there?
  • General Pick-up/ Clean-up around the farm.  This is an old farm with lots of the remanants of an old farm.  Sure, that provides character, but we'd like to do a little picking up
    • do you have a trailer that we could load for a trip to the landfill or scrap metal yard?
    • parents - help us move toward a kid-safe(r) farm by identifying and cleaning up potential kid hazards
    • organize random lumber in the barn
  • Help us design an irrigation pond on the farm.  Do you have skills as a hydrologist/ landscape architect/ pond designer?
  • Help design/experiment with bicycle-powered farm implements.  We're very interested in experimenting with human-powered farm implements.  Do you have interests/skills in bicycle frame design or welding?  Or maybe you just have some creative energy to put into this fun idea.
  • Design/build a chicken coop (yes, for chickens!)
  • permaculture design of perennial plantings (fruit trees, brambles, asparagus, nuts, etc.)
  • Lawn mowing?  We currently hire our neighbor, but if someone has the means to get a mower to the farm and really likes mowing lawns, it would be a big help!
  • Organize a public screening of our CSA video, "Talkin' Bout Making Culture" in Traverse City (library?)
