MEADOWLARK FARM SPRING CSA NEWS 5-28-10 Dear friends The last spring share......it's been a sweet one and we hope that you've enjoyed your spring season of green love. We appreciate your support and excitement and commitment to our farm and family. Your dedication to washing your greens, sorting through field dirt and enticing your family to eat greens yet again for dinner, are immeasurable. Thank you. Today's boxes include: 1# of salad mix(mixed lettuce and greens),in the big bag a head of lettuce either panisse or jamai red oak, a head of yukina savoy chinese cabbage and a bunch of cooking greens, a bunch of pink beauty radishes, hakkurei turnips, green onions(together in a bag), rhubarb, asparagus and a little bag of tarragon. Here's a simple, zingy recipe to try with steamed or roasted asparagus, potatoes, fish or any other simple vegetable that you would do with lemon(like broccoli? Cauliflower?), or how about on salad or lettuce? Tis the season for meyer lemons from California and mmm are they good: MEYER LEMON SAUCE WITH TARRAGON - 1 large meyer lemon -1 shallot, finely diced -sea salt and pepper -2 TBL extra virgin olive oil -2 TBL tarragon leaves, lightly chopped Remove zest and juice of the lemon and put both in a bowl with the shallot and ¼ tsp salt. Let stand 10 minutes, then whisk in oil and add tarragon. Season with a little pepper and taste. Whisk in more olive oil if it's too zingy. Next Friday will be the first summer share for Leelanau folk, then the first share for TC will be Tuesday june 8th. I've sent out messages to TC folk and I'm working on my Leelanau email list right now. This time of year, especially when the temperatures are high, demands that we pay attention to so much. We plant and prepare summer gardens and then we need to watch diligently to make sure all of the babies have enough water. We lay infrastructure for tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers and it all demands NOW! and what we can do is just so much. The greenhouse is soooo hot, demanding attention and water and yet we can only move out as many plants as hardening off space allows. With the rain of last Friday coupled with the heat of the last week, the weeds have sprouted like mad and that demands our attention too. So, we plug away and luckily, we have a wonderful crew of workers who also plug away and in a couple of weeks we can all breathe a sigh of relief as we settle into our typical "busy" summer routine. Until then, we thank you for your patience and understanding. Enjoy some salad this week(don't forget to wash) and we will all look forward to those washed salad greens next week, right? Love, the meadowlarks
