Hello friends,

This installment of the meadowlark spring share brings to you a packing puzzle of a box.  Nick Preneta, long time meadowlarker(and father to be!!!) loves to put together all of the greens in one big bag, while figuring out how these organic shapes and forms, none uniform, will coalesce together into your square share box.  That said, we hope that you won't be too inconvenienced dealing with your various greens today.  You may need to re-bag some of the smaller heads so that they fit into your fridge.   For starters, in the bottom of the box is a big bunch of French breakfast radishes.  At the bottom of the big bag is a lime green head of Napa cabbage called "minuet", a head of green romaine and a red oak called "jamai" and a bunchy green which will be either rainbow chard, dino kale or green curly kale(held together by a rubber band, thus the name "bunchy green"; on top is a bag of asparagus.  We had hoped for more than this, but we picked as hard as we could.

Next week will be the last of the spring shares.  We will start with summer shares on Friday, june 4th.  Tuesday, june 8th will be the first TC day because in the summer we split our harvest and delivery schedule into 2 days instead of one. Friday stays Leelanau County day.  Plus, if you are an every other week share, we further split that list in half to even out the numbers.  What this means is you may not start with the first box.  Not to worry, the details will follow in an email soon.  Just know that we will be ready to roll with summer shares very soon!  Also, we do still have shares available for summer so if you know of anyone who has voiced an interest, send them along to:  http://www.csafarms.org/meadowlarkfarm.asp for further details about the farm and how it all works.  There is a signup form in the left hand menu.

Here's a fun salad recipe to try with your head of Napa cabbage, hoping that you still have some of that whopper bag of cilantro and maybe some scallions floating around in your crisper drawer:

SPICY NAPPA CABBAGE SLAW WITH CILANTRO DRESSING

-1/4 c. rice vinegar(not seasoned)         -2 tsp. sugar(how about maple syrup or honey)

- 1 tsp grated peeled ginger                 -2 TBL canola oil(or substitute 1 TBL sesame oil)

-1 fresh chile finely chopped                -1 head Napa cabbage, cored and cut crosswise ½"

-1 bunch scallions, sliced                      -1/2 c. coarsely chopped cilantro

(optional add ins:  grated radish, turnip or carrot for color)

Whisk together vinegar, sweetener, ginger, oil, chile and ½ tsp. salt.  Add remaining ingredients and toss well.  Let stand, stirring and tossing occasionally, 10 minutes.

Today found a big crew of us transplanting flowers, kale and more flowers.  We were running yesterday to keep up with irrigating all of the new little transplants, so are thankful today for overcast skies and a little bit of sprinkles.  The newly planted babies love it.  Happy Birthday Jane Watts!  Enjoy, the meadowlarks
